\"be<\/a>The whole month of April we have been focusing on The B’s of Interviewing<\/strong> — tried and true tips to ace your interviews.\u00a0 We began with a discussion on B<\/strong>eing on Time, moved to B<\/strong>eing Prepared and today, tip #3, is B<\/strong>eing Interested.<\/p>\n

B<\/strong>eing Interested is comprised of two parts.\u00a0 First, building rapport.<\/strong>\u00a0 Seasoned interviewers are skilled at small talk, which puts the candidate at ease and allows the interviewer to test the “fit” of the interviewee.\u00a0 Be prepared to engage in this small talk and engage honestly.\u00a0 If the woman across the table asks about the local college’s basketball team and you don’t follow them, be honest.\u00a0 Don’t pretend to engage where you lack experience or knowledge.\u00a0 Remember the integrity thing?\u00a0 It applies here, as well.<\/p>\n

The second component of B<\/strong>eing Interested is to ask sincere questions<\/strong>. The easiest way to do this?\u00a0 Follow up on questions asked of you.\u00a0 Ask for additional information or clarification.\u00a0 Ask questions from your research, about the company\u2019s direction, about what keeps them up at night, about the goals for the department or position.\u00a0 Employers are much more likely to remember a candidate who engaged in meaningful, thoughtful conversations about them<\/i>.\u00a0 Remember, this is a two-way street.\u00a0 Both parties are dancing — trying to decide if and when to close the deal.\u00a0 Even if you aren\u2019t interested, ask questions to practice.\u00a0 Yes, I said practice at the interview.\u00a0 Don\u2019t share this with anyone, but I know people who go on interviews for positions that don\u2019t interest them just for practice.<\/p>\n

And, what will you practice?\u00a0 The B<\/strong>‘s of Interviewing, of course!\u00a0 B<\/strong>e on Time, B<\/strong>e Prepared and B<\/strong>e Interested.<\/p>\n
