Do you fret about rejection as you prepare or send your r\u00e9sum\u00e9?<\/p>\n

Are your thoughts so focused on rejection that your r\u00e9sum\u00e9 is ambiguous, general and plain?<\/p>\n

Hopefully, your fear is not driving you to send out a boring r\u00e9sum\u00e9.\u00a0 If it is, it is time to revolutionize the way you think about your r\u00e9sum\u00e9. (Remember, not every employer or hiring manager is going to like you or your experience — and that is OK!)<\/p>\n

At the end of a recent presentation, a woman approached me and shared how frustrated she was having to spend endless hours targeting her resume to the large list of job openings found on the internet. \u00a0She shared her disappointment that after 100\u2019s of applications, she had received a handful of rejection emails and not one interview.<\/p>\n

Her kind soul, bright smile and brief words led me to believe that she was\u00a0an organizer of projects, people and things.\u00a0 She was someone who knew how to keep customers happy and projects moving forward.\u00a0 I knew this in just a 3 minute conversation.<\/p>\n

With tears and a crack in her voice\u00a0she asked if I would look at her r\u00e9sum\u00e9. \u00a0I did. \u00a0 The skills and personality that I experienced in our brief meeting were totally absent from her r\u00e9sum\u00e9.<\/p>\n

I inquired if my impression of her was correct.\u00a0 She confirmed it was.\u00a0 Then, I inquired why she had elected to omit her uniqueness from her r\u00e9sum\u00e9.<\/p>\n

In a bolded voice she stated, “Rejection is awful.” \u00a0She pulled her r\u00e9sum\u00e9 from my hand, saying, “I am old school and what you are asking about does not belong in my r\u00e9sum\u00e9.”<\/p>\n

Standing out, sharing who you are and how you deliver value can feel uncomfortable.\u00a0 Clearly, this was outside of the woman’s\u00a0comfort zone.<\/p>\n

I smiled \u2013 I do get it.<\/p>\n

Many people like to play it safe.\u00a0\u00a0 Innovation can feel risky.<\/p>\n

For years, I was afraid to stand out or to share how I am different and unique.\u00a0 Why? I didn’t know how to communicate my unique value in a way that worked for me.<\/p>\n

Therefore,\u00a0I took the safe, blend in, be the same as others, approach.\u00a0 It seemed far less risky than standing out and facing the ridicule I feared.<\/p>\n

Here is what I discovered — there is far more acceptance of my unique value when I\u00a0genuinely share who I am.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t mean everyone likes me or that I don\u2019t experience rejection, I do. \u00a0\u00a0Not everyone likes me, wants to work with me or hire me.<\/p>\n
