\"\"<\/a>Impressions and judgments occur. \u00a0And, yes, I think they matter.<\/p>\n

People take in information quickly and, just as quickly, use the data to make judgments about what they see and hear. \u00a0Presto! \u00a0A first impression of you is produced. \u00a0That first impression sticks and all other things someone learns about you is layered on top of that first impression.<\/p>\n

In early January an “old” friend came to visit. \u00a0We have known each other for nearly 30 years; yet don’t see each other often. \u00a0During her visit she shared the story of how we first met to her friend. \u00a0As my old friend described our first meeting in great detail, I wanted to hide.<\/p>\n

Why? \u00a0I didn’t make such a great first impression. \u00a0Even though we didn’t get off on the right foot, it all worked out. \u00a0Still, the story was a BIG reminder to me of the importance of first impressions. \u00a0Especially when the person listening to the story replied, “After all that, I am surprised you have been friends for so many years.” \u00a0Ouch.<\/p>\n

Here are a few tips to help you distinguish yourself in a positive manner — whether during your job search or any other time you need to make a good first impression:<\/p>\n

Be Enthusiastic.<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/b>Enthusiasm is contagious. \u00a0Thoughtful questions, openness and the desire to engage are viewed as positive interactions.<\/p>\n

Be Professional.<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/b>Professionalism is demonstrated by how you communicate with others, how you carry yourself and in your overall appearance. \u00a0A sincere attitude, and a look that matches, instills respect and trust.<\/p>\n

Be Responsible and Accountable.<\/b><\/p>\n

A job search (and life!) has good days and bad days. \u00a0If there are things you need to do, get them done. \u00a0Blaming outside factors (the economy, a previous boss, the weather, family duties or traffic) for preventing you from doing a task does not fly. \u00a0Drop the excuses. \u00a0Stuff happens. \u00a0It is how you handle the “stuff” that leaves an impression.<\/p>\n

As the saying goes, “You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” \u00a0Make the most of every opportunity. \u00a0The first connection with someone new is the foundation for all future interactions. \u00a0Do everything in your power to connect and make a powerful first impression.<\/p>\n
