\"cindy<\/a>Networking gets a bad rap sometimes. \u00a0I think it’s because networkers forget the basic reason for networking — connecting with people and building relationships. \u00a0That’s it.<\/p>\n

The goal is not to get something from someone. \u00a0The goal is to get to know people. \u00a0People are amazing and fun — and great resources.<\/p>\n

Here are 6 tips to help with networking, whether you love to do it or if you want to improve your skills:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

1. Identify well-attended events.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Select events that will help you expand your contacts within your industry. \u00a0 Leverage the events you always attend and add other events to your calendar. \u00a0Look for events where you can meet new contacts.<\/p>\n

2. Set a budget for networking<\/strong><\/p>\n

You will have expenses: \u00a0business cards, attire, event fees, food or beverage, or a donation to a charity or cause. \u00a0Be willing to invest in yourself — and do it with a grateful heart.<\/p>\n

3. Set a schedule for networking<\/strong><\/p>\n

There are so many events you could attend. \u00a0 Plan which events to attend, who to connect with, what to wear, and how you will follow up. \u00a0Having a plan and a schedule will keep you focused.<\/p>\n

4. Leverage your existing relationships and connections.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Are there people you want to see or speak with? \u00a0Is getting an appointment on their calendar tough? \u00a0Seek events where you know those people will attend. \u00a0Connect ahead of time and arrange a time to talk at the event. \u00a0This uses your time (and theirs!) effectively.<\/p>\n

5. Stand out in the crowd<\/strong><\/p>\n

Know how you want to differentiate yourself from others at an event. \u00a0You want to gain favorable attention with key contacts and those who can help you land your dream job. \u00a0Know who will be at the event and be open to the opportunities before you. \u00a0Don\u2019t sell, rather ask questions and get to know people.<\/p>\n

6. Leverage your online network and online events<\/strong><\/p>\n

Many events are growing and some events combine both online and face-to-face experiences. \u00a0If you get an \u201cEvite\u201d with an RSVP treat it as you would any invitation with an RSVP. \u00a0If you need to check in \u2013 do it. \u00a0Check the list for who is attending — you may wish to add someone to your “connect with” list. \u00a0If you can’t join in person and the event is live-streamed join online.<\/p>\n
