{"id":2277,"date":"2014-11-04T05:57:46","date_gmt":"2014-11-04T10:57:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/accelerateyoursearchnow.com\/blog\/?p=2277"},"modified":"2014-10-29T10:53:59","modified_gmt":"2014-10-29T14:53:59","slug":"stop-being-plain-vanilla","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/accelerateyoursearchnow.com\/blog\/2014\/11\/stop-being-plain-vanilla\/","title":{"rendered":"Stop being plain vanilla"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"fcbkbttn_buttons_block\" id=\"fcbkbttn_left\"><div class=\"fcbkbttn_like \"><fb:like href=\"http:\/\/accelerateyoursearchnow.com\/blog\/2014\/11\/stop-being-plain-vanilla\/\" action=\"like\" colorscheme=\"light\" layout=\"button_count\"  size=\"small\"><\/fb:like><\/div><\/div><div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2285\" src=\"http:\/\/accelerateyoursearchnow.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/vanilla.jpg\" alt=\"vanilla\" width=\"207\" height=\"195\" \/>Every person on earth is unique. \u00a0You have talents and skills that lead you to do things in a way that no else can replicate.Embrace who you are.\u00a0 Stop being plain vanilla.<\/p>\n<p>So many of the people I work with or connect with at workshops make it their goal to simply blend in. \u00a0Why?<\/p>\n<p>Blending in will not get you hired or change your career situation. \u00a0It will not help you soar, be satisfied, or earn the paycheck you desire. \u00a0No risk means no reward.<\/p>\n<p>Why are you choosing the safe route? \u00a0What is holding you back? \u00a0Is it something you don&#8217;t know? \u00a0Is it support? \u00a0Are you more concerned with\u00a0the risk or the reward?<\/p>\n<p>If you are creating a resume, bio, LinkedIn profile or webpage it can feel risky to be anything but plain vanilla. \u00a0Honestly, sharing my unique value felt uncomfortable to me for a very long time. \u00a0After all, telling your story puts you out there in the world. \u00a0It opens you to judgment and rejection. \u00a0Yes, it makes you vulnerable.<\/p>\n<p>What will people say or think? \u00a0Questions will pop up. \u00a0Here are some that popped up for me:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What if they think I am bragging?<\/li>\n<li>What if no one hires me?<\/li>\n<li>Will I be among the long-term unemployed?<\/li>\n<li>What if I can&#8217;t find a job except for\u00a0flipping burgers?<\/li>\n<li>What will happen to my family? My home? \u00a0My pride? \u00a0My value?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Yes, telling your story is scary. \u00a0But . . . telling your story (and being vulnerable) ALSO created powerful connections. \u00a0It helps you share and realize your unique value.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So, what is your story? \u00a0How do you share your unique value?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Are you like my client whose &#8220;special sauce&#8221; is finding substantial ways to reduce expenses while still building a more reliable fleet of trucks? \u00a0When he was finally ready to share how his unique experiences shaped his integrity, work ethic and budgeting prowess, he was no longer just another candidate, he was the person the hiring managers wanted to interview.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, sharing information has risks. \u00a0Yes, it means being vulnerable. \u00a0Yes, it can lead to great reward &#8212; personally and professionally.<\/p>\n<p>Still on the fence about personal branding and sharing who you are? \u00a0Not sure about branding your resume, bio and online profiles? \u00a0Firm that you want to remain in your comfort zone, continuing to be plain vanilla, allowing you and your resume to blend into the pile of 80-100 resumes all seeking the position you desire?<\/p>\n<p>Do me a favor &#8212; take these three actions, then decide. \u00a0Deal?<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Ponder this quote by Bren\u00e9 Brown, author of <em>Daring Greatly:<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0 \u201cEmbracing our vulnerabilities is risky but not nearly as dangerous as giving up on love and belonging and joy\u2014the experiences that make us the most vulnerable.
