In 2012, I posted the article\u00a0Did you get career advice from your mother?<\/a><\/em> about the some of the career advice I had received from my mother early in my career.<\/p>\n

As Mother\u2019s Day approaches and I reflect on how to honor and celebrate my mother, I could not help but reflect on the fact that my mother\u2019s advice continues to bless my life. \u00a0I appreciate her years of wisdom and experience and her more recent advice, too.<\/p>\n

I hope you get to honor your mother as Mother\u2019s Day nears.<\/p>\n

This is my mother . . .<\/p>\n

What was the best career ad\"Mother's<\/a>vice you received from your mother or another\u00a0special women in your life? \u00a0Will you share? \u00a0Post your comments below.<\/p>\n

Here the gems of my mother\u2019s advice:<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t work too late. \u00a0<\/strong>Days can be long sometimes. \u00a0Late one day, my mother, in her kindest voice, shared, “I think you should quit for today and quit early more often.”<\/p>\n

Good advice. \u00a0Stop, bring the day to close and be grateful for all you have accomplished and for those you served on that day.<\/p>\n

Relationships count<\/strong>.\u00a0 Building and nurturing relationships in your life and in your career matters.\u00a0 See and understand the point-of-view of others, learn about other people, and know what they like and dislike.<\/p>\n

Then, find a way to make a connection and build a relationship– doing so is a skill and an art form. \u00a0Honing your relationship building skills is valuable and critical to building a sustainable career.<\/p>\n

Service matters and, when done gladly, all the\u00a0better<\/strong>.\u00a0 The minimum is just that and less than average. \u00a0Always do your best and then something extra.\u00a0 My mother always adds the extra thing. \u00a0It is part of her personal branding.<\/p>\n

Delivery of what\u2019s expected meets the standard, it gets the job done. \u00a0It completes the job and just covers the basics.<\/p>\n

Adding something highlights your brand and increases the perceived value of your work. \u00a0Over time, your added value does set you apart from the crowd. \u00a0Something of extra significance can: \u00a0bring a smile, help you gain favorable attention, encourages referrals, and repeat business. \u00a0All these items enhance your stock value and helps sustain your career.<\/p>\n

Enjoy Mother\u2019s Day on Sunday as you celebrate in whatever special way fits you!<\/p>\n
