{"id":766,"date":"2012-01-24T05:31:20","date_gmt":"2012-01-24T10:31:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/accelerateyoursearchnow.com\/blog\/?p=766"},"modified":"2012-01-16T08:31:28","modified_gmt":"2012-01-16T13:31:28","slug":"overqualified-%e2%80%93-really","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/accelerateyoursearchnow.com\/blog\/2012\/01\/overqualified-%e2%80%93-really\/","title":{"rendered":"Overqualified \u2013 Really?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"fcbkbttn_buttons_block\" id=\"fcbkbttn_left\"><div class=\"fcbkbttn_like \"><fb:like href=\"http:\/\/accelerateyoursearchnow.com\/blog\/2012\/01\/overqualified-%e2%80%93-really\/\" action=\"like\" colorscheme=\"light\" layout=\"button_count\"  size=\"small\"><\/fb:like><\/div><\/div><p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Who decides if you are overqualifed and why?\u00a0 The employer does.\u00a0 That\u2019s who.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Why is there so much focus on overqualifed?\u00a0 I don\u2019t know.\u00a0 I, of course, do have an opinion on the matter, but I doubt that will help you accelerate your search.\u00a0 However, maybe I can help you by looking at the issue a bit differently.<\/p>\n<p>Have you ever said to a door to door salesperson, \u201cNot today, thank you\u201d or the Boy Scout \u201cNo thank you, I bought caramel corn from another scout before you\u201d or \u201cwe don\u2019t eat caramel popcorn, thank you for stopping by\u201d?\u00a0\u00a0 In many cases the dreaded statement \u201cYou are overqualified for this position\u201d is just simply a no thank you.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, I know the dreaded statement stings.\u00a0 It does not feel like \u2018no thank you\u2019 or <strong>does it?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What happens if you reframe \u201cYou are overqualified\u201d to \u201cNo, thank you\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>My bet is you think the later stings less, but does it really?\u00a0 Think about it.\u00a0 It is still rejection.\u00a0 Rejection is, in my view the underlying issue with most of the conversations around the issue and statement\u00a0\u201cYou are overqualified\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>No one (at least no one I know) likes to be rejected.\u00a0 And almost no one I know likes to reject others.<\/p>\n<p>Especially, if you are in business and\u00a0interviewing\u00a0someone or talking to someone with good skills, and loads of experience.\u00a0 Most people don\u2019t like to be mean or reject another person, even when they don&#8217;t personally connect.\u00a0 Sure there are some that do, you know them, and I do too.<\/p>\n<p>What would happen if you heard \u201cNo, thank you\u201d in lieu of \u201cYou are overqualified for this position\u201d?\u00a0 Think about\u00a0 it!<\/p>\n<p>I once knew a hiring manager who, said \u201cthank you\u201d and allowed someone else to say \u201cNo, thank you\u201d.\u00a0 Here is how he did it \u2013 during the each interview he was very good at finding something good about all the candidates he rejected.\u00a0 He picked out something good about the candidate\u00a0and made\u00a0a mental note.\u00a0 At the end of the interview,\u00a0he confirmed the candidate&#8217;s home phone number, and he called each one after an interview.\u00a0 Usually he placed the call before the person arrived home and left\u00a0a message, he would share the one good point he noted\u00a0and thank them for interviewing.\u00a0 He would end the message with \u2018good luck, your &lt;whatever the good point was&gt; will be of value to your next boss.\u00a0\u00a0 I learned that good quality he shared with the candidate was always a quality he appreciated, but he did not value at that point\u00a0in the role that he was attempting to fill.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Why, did he do this? \u00a0Well, I never ask him, yet here is why I think he did it.<\/p>\n<p>He cared about people and the feelings of people.
