{"id":935,"date":"2012-05-01T05:11:52","date_gmt":"2012-05-01T09:11:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/accelerateyoursearchnow.com\/blog\/?p=935"},"modified":"2012-04-22T17:46:58","modified_gmt":"2012-04-22T21:46:58","slug":"do-what-you-love-or-settle-for-a-job-you-dont-like","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/accelerateyoursearchnow.com\/blog\/2012\/05\/do-what-you-love-or-settle-for-a-job-you-dont-like\/","title":{"rendered":"Do what you love &#8230; or settle for a job you don\u2019t like &#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"fcbkbttn_buttons_block\" id=\"fcbkbttn_left\"><div class=\"fcbkbttn_like \"><fb:like href=\"http:\/\/accelerateyoursearchnow.com\/blog\/2012\/05\/do-what-you-love-or-settle-for-a-job-you-dont-like\/\" action=\"like\" colorscheme=\"light\" layout=\"button_count\"  size=\"small\"><\/fb:like><\/div><\/div><p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>What is your trade-off for doing what you love to do?\u00a0 What\u00a0is your trade-off for something you enjoy or want to have?<\/p>\n<p>As I did the dishes, which I don\u2019t like to do (but I do because I love to have a clean kitchen), I was thinking about a very intense conversation recently.\u00a0 The conversation was with a friend who is irritated over her current job situation.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>My friend and fellow human resource professional, challenged me the other day, big time on my career advice.\u00a0 We both have similar views on what it takes to be successful, drive, talent, willingness to work hard, persistence, continuous learning and mastery, \u00a0and doing the \u2018right\u2019 things, so what was the challenge?<\/p>\n<p>For years, I have shared my career advice, \u201cDo what you love, money follows.\u201d\u00a0 Her challenge was that my career advice did not hold true in this economy and I need to change or update my message.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She said it is not longer possible to find a job you love, and make a living, therefore I should STOP giving out that advice.\u00a0 She said businesses continue to have increased costs and many are still in the mode of changing to fit the talent that is available, or cutting hours to avoid letting jobs and people go to meet payroll, or struggling with new and more expensive compliance regulations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As we talked and discussed this I smiled, and her frustration explored with \u201cHave you crawled under a rock?\u201d \u00a0Finally I asked her if she thought in my advice I was suggesting that everyone would have a job that was 100% what they loved or enjoyed doing, she nodded \u201cyes\u201d and added you just can be paid enough today to do only what you love.<\/p>\n<p>By then I was laughing and feeling a bit misunderstood.\u00a0 I do believe my advice is sound in any economy and that if you \u201cDo what you love, money follows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What I don\u2019t believe for one minute is you get to do what you love 100% of the time or that you don\u2019t have to also do things you might not like to do.\u00a0 Employers and customers pay you for results.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To get results there are some parts of all jobs that you may not \u201clove\u201d or \u201clike\u201d but doing those things are part of getting to do what you do love.\u00a0 Many people have said it in many ways such as \u2018work\u2019 is a four letter word, or \u2018that is why it is called work\u2019.\u00a0 One of my favorite messages on this topic is from <a href=\"http:\/\/larrywinget.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Larry Winget, speaker and the \u201cPitbull of Personal Development\u00ae<\/a>\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0 Watch<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vhhDz0QsN8w&amp;feature=related\" target=\"_blank\"> Larry&#8217;s video clip<\/a> and his message for yourself.<\/p>\n<p>Look you don\u2019t get what you deserve, you get what you work for and what you ask for in the world of business.\u00a0 You get paid for what you love because you are willing to do what it takes to get good at what you do and because you are will to do the things you don\u2019t really like to do that go along with what you love to do.\u00a0 It works that way in any economy.<\/p>\n<p>When you do what you love, you enjoy it, you are good at it, you are likely to use your talent to be the best in that area and you don\u2019t mind the trade-offs or just adjust to them as part of the deal.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t love living in a big city where the wages are higher, you love living in a small town and are willing to drive to the big city you can earn a higher wage.
