We all need help from time to time.  Here are four tips for getting the support you need and finding the necessary resources to assist you:

Prioritize your needs and act early.

When it is avoidable, don’t wait until you are in crisis.  Write down your needs and decide what action you will take today to find support with your top need.

Be very specific in your ask and be willing to share requested information.

When you are vague or reluctant to provide requested details you may be misdirected.  You may also miss out on support or information.  People are smart and, given specific information, it is easier for them to ask different questions to help you.

Understand your emotions and deal with them first, when possible.

You own your emotions.  Others don’t have the power to control or create your emotions — unless you give them permission to do so.  Remember your emotions may trigger emotions for others.  You can’t control their choice or reaction, however you can choose yours.

Receive what is offered, be grateful and willing to ask, “Do you know someone else who might be able to help?”

Be open to receiving what is offered.  Be grateful in the moment.  Say “thank you” aloud — even when the support is not what you hoped for or wanted.  Follow up and ask who else might be able to help.

Allow the conversation to flow.  We all need help and support from time to time.  Connection, community and caring are often easier to find than you think.

Specific communication and action are key elements to getting support and finding resources.  When you need support to overcome obstacles and solve problems that may be blocking or slowing your flow to success, pause, prioritize and pose the specific request.  Then identify the role your emotions play and receive with gratitude what others can and will share with you.

flowers in snowIt’s spring.  While it has been for about a month now, it doesn’t really feel much like spring to me.  Yet, slowly, the signs are shooing up.  The trees look ready to bud, the ground is visible again and people are buzzing around outside and at events, including those anxious to explore the job market or consider their next move.

For those of you with spring fever who are beginning to think about what’s next for your career, here is a short checklist to review.  The list includes three action items and some key questions to answer before your begin your “spring fling” and move into a full blown job search:

1.  Talk to your advocates and your brand ambassadors.

Do you have support?  Do they know you are exploring a move?  How can you entice additional support?  The 2016 elections are not near, yet you can learn from the possible candidates by watching and listening.  Your advocate and brand ambassadors are out and about, having meetings, talking to people and they can help you get a feel for the landscape — if they are well informed by you.

2.  Know what you are uniquely known for and how to leverage that in the marketplace.

Why is what you do of unique value?  Who can use your talent?  What can you do for those who can use your talent?  Can you prove your value?  Do you know how to answer the question, “Why should I invest time talking to you?”  Even if it is never asked of you, knowing the answer will carry you far.  Knowing your value and how to leverage it in the marketplace will accelerate your search.

3.  Know your call to action.

If you are exploring and/or launching a career move campaign, you need support.  In order to garner quality support, you must know what you want and what action you want from each person you engage.  Do you want them to listen?  Do you want feedback?  Do you want referrals or introductions to hiring managers?  Do you want information about their industry or particular business?  Before you engage, know your call to action.

  • Do your career marketing materials promote you in a credible and distinctive manner?

2.  Create an action plan.

  • Who are the 25 people who need to know you and your career goals?
  • Who else needs to know you?
  • How will you get in front of the people who need to know about you?
  • What are 3 things you will do this week to connect with these people?
  • How will you follow-up and reconnect with the people who need to know you?

3.  Set up an execution strategy.

  • What are going to do every single day to execute your plan?
  • How will you measure and evaluate your results?

Tired of waiting for potential employers to call you?

Would you love to have a hiring manager call and say, “Could we set a time to talk and would you bring your resume with you?”

Yes?  Then it is time to create — and use — an approach letter.

An approach letter is a secret tool I have shared with clients for years.  You can use it to generate interviews and meetings.

OK, so you want the phone to ring and you’ve agreed to write the letter.  There’s just one problem.  You don’t know what to say.

You want to stand out, grab interest and clearly communicate the value you offer, but you know you can’t go on and on.

Your goal is to have the hiring manager read your letter and say aloud, “WOW, this person sounds incredible, I must talk to him!”

Writing a letter that generates that out loud reply is easier than you think.  Here are the five elements to include:

1.  Clarity.  Your letter should clearly communicate your value, purpose for the contact and the BIG benefits you offer.

2.  Specificity.  Use numbers and other specifics to communicate the scope of your value.

3.  Promise.   Your letter needs to communicate your promise of value.  Developing your personal branding helps you clearly state your big pay-off to a potential hiring manager.

4.  Relevancy.  You need to reveal why you, and what you bring to the table, is relevant to the potential hiring manager’s current need or situation.

5.  Intrigue.  Work to provoke curiosity or an urgent need to know more.

ANY time you clearly state a super specific solution, you will radically bump up your ‘”attractor-factor.”  That is the special sauce.  It is what will get a busy hiring manager to say, “WOW, I must talk to this person!”  In an instant you are not a vague unknown person in a stack of resumes.  You become relevant and offer hope that a solution is at hand.

Your assignment: Review your brand profile and these five elements.  Write the letter.  Edit it.  Proof read it.  Mail it.  Listen for the phone.

It is the same for your career.  When you have a “vision” for your career others can see what you see.  If you share it, others can help you achieve your vision.

It is a powerful question.  Yet, many don’t like the question.Were you taught not to ask “Why?”  Did someone tell you to use “Why?” sparingly?Yes, some people are defensive when asked “Why?”  Others are not.  Frankly, I think if you want to search for facts,  “Why?”  is a very  powerful question.Asking “Why?” can help you discover information more quickly and in the process accelerate your search.  If you want to determine if a position or organization is a good fit for you, ask “Why?”

When considering a new position ask yourself the following five “Why” questions.  Remember to answer with facts, not interpretations.

  1. Why do you want this job?
  2. Why this job at this organization over any other job?
  3. Why didn’t you know about this job before today?
  4. Why will you be more successful at this job in this organization than at your past position or a previously applied for posting?
  5. Why will you pursue this position and be successful?

These “Five Whys” are helpful in many situations.  The questions (and subsequent answers) allow you to get to the issue, arrive at a decision or gain a better understanding with speed and clarity.

popcornIs your resume stale and lifeless?  Or is it full of energy and relevant data about you and what you do?

Your resume is an important marketing tool.  If it is as stale as popcorn popped a week ago sitting in a humid kitchen, your reputation, career and next promotion are being impacted.

A resume without energy, pop and sizzle will sit.  In fact, it may never be read.

Think about it.  If you are busy, do you want to read a lifeless, seemingly endless list of job duties or do you want to know who this person is and what they can do for you?  The latter, I bet.  The same is true for busy hiring managers.

If you have not updated your resume in the last 90 days, it is time to do so.  That’s right, update it once a quarter.  Resumes have a short shelf life.

Before you do anything to your resume spend a week with it.  Here’s how:

  1. Read it three times a day.  Once in the morning, once after lunch and once in the evening.  One of these times read it aloud.
  2. After a week, grab a highlighter and highlight the accomplishments/results you achieved in the last six months or a year.  Where are these within the document?
  3. Grab a different color highlighter and mark your relevant brand attributes.
  4. Finally, grab a pen and mark out the parts that bore you, date you or are no longer relevant to the work you are doing or want to do.

Now you are ready to begin to update it and make your resume pop.  No more stale, lifeless resume for you.

HiredDo you remember how enthusiastic and excited you were after your first interview?  I hope so.  You will need to continue to share that level of interest with the hiring manager as the process continues.

Candidates who fail to communicate sincere interest throughout the process are certain to miss out.  It is difficult to stay interested when an organization has a different timeline than yours.  It is easy to let the voice in your head tell you that the company is not really interested in you.  When you are in career transition and want to return to work quickly two weeks can feel like two months!

Instead of waiting for “the” phone call, use your time to pursue other opportunities.  Focusing on only one opportunity at a time may extend your search by months.

Also use the time to learn additional information about the position for which you interviewed and the company you are looking forward to joining.  Doing this prepares you for your second interview — preparation is rare at this level and it will set you apart from the competition.

Here are some easy ways to make the most of your second interview:

  1. Read the company website and press releases.
  2. Learn about the company’s products and services.
  3. Read LinkedIn and online profiles of employees, leaders, and managers who work for the company.
  4. Connect with appropriate people in the organization, online and in-person.
  5. Read and learn about the company’s competitors.
  6. Practice interviewing.
  7. Know how you come across and how you demonstrate interest, eagerness, and enthusiasm.

Being able to authentically communicate how you fit and how your experience will help the hiring manager achieve his/her goals will help you ace the second interview.

It is a challenge to wait for the next interview.  Make the most of the time and prepare.

Good news is that a little focus, clarity and planning will help you accelerate your search.  Here are 6 questions to help you do just that:

  1. Why do you work?
  2. Why do you really want a new job?
  3. What value are you known for in the workplace?
  4. What type of organization do you desire to work for?
  5. Who do you know in the organizations where you desire to work?
  6. How will you connect with the people you know?

Taking the time to answer these questions before you start to update your resume will help you in your quest for a new job.  It is easier than you think to accelerate your search and reduce job search stress.

Your Career DataThe recent news of high-profile data breaches has IT professionals reminding us of the importance of protecting our personal information.  Data breaches are costly to both companies and individuals.  If you have ever experienced a personal data breach you know how much time (and hassle!) it takes to clear up the situation.

Where is your career data stored?  Is is current?  Is it secure?  Can you access it with ease?

If you are exploring a new position or promotion, you are busy.  A commonly overlooked task is ensuring the security of your career data.  Knowing the location of your data, ensuring it is current and accessing it with ease is important.  When you can access your information quickly, people view you as prepared, organized and on top of your personal matters.

Since you are already gathering tax information this time of year, set aside a bit of additional time to gather, update and secure your career data.  Then, when you get “the call” you can quickly provide all the information requested.  You will be glad you invested the time to ensure your online career data is current, secure and accessible.

Your LinkedIn account is a good place to start.  Next, move to your email and company directory bios.  Finally, create a list of all your online accounts and move through the list.  Use the following six steps to assist you:

1.  Change your password.  Use different passwords for different sites.

2.  Review and update your “Privacy Settings.”

3.  Update your email or digest settings; turn off those you don’t need or use.

4.  Verify your contact information.  Update as appropriate.

5.  Check your links to websites and other accounts.  Update as needed.

6.  Read your profile.  Update as needed.

Final tip — take out your calendar and add an appointment in 90 days to review your information.  Maintaining your career data by setting regular appointments creates a simple habit that reduces stress and worry.
